3 STRATEGIES FOR YOUR CHILD TO BUILD COURAGE

February 14, 2023

Ignite camp provides an opportunity for young people to develop courage and confidence, which are essential qualities for success in life. As a parent, you may be wondering how you can support your child in developing courage during their time at Ignite. In this article, we will discuss three practical tips for young people to develop courage, supported by academic research.

  1. Step Out of the Comfort Zone: One of the best ways to develop courage is by stepping out of the comfort zone. Encourage your child to take risks, try new things, and embrace challenges during their time at Ignite. Research has shown that stepping outside of one's comfort zone is positively associated with improved confidence and self-efficacy (Krejčí, 2014). By pushing themselves to try new things and take risks, young people can build their courage and develop resilience.
  2. Face Fears: Another effective strategy for developing courage is by facing fears. Encourage your child to confront their fears during their time at Ignite, whether it be by trying something new or overcoming a specific fear. Research has shown that facing fears is positively associated with improved confidence and reduced anxiety (Rodriguez et al., 2019). By gradually facing their fears, young people can develop courage and resilience, which will help them face future challenges in life.
  3. Seek Support: Developing courage is not always easy, and it is essential for young people to seek support from their peers and camp counsellors. Encourage your child to seek out support when they are feeling overwhelmed, and to connect with others who are also facing similar challenges. Research has shown that social support is positively associated with improved resilience and self-efficacy (Seery et al., 2010). By seeking support, young people can build their courage and develop supportive relationships that will serve them well throughout their lives.

In conclusion, developing courage is essential for young people to succeed in life. By stepping out of the comfort zone, facing fears, and seeking support, young people can build their courage and resilience, which will help them overcome future challenges. These strategies are particularly essential for young people attending Ignite Camp, as it provides a unique opportunity for them to develop courage in a supportive and encouraging environment. As a parent, you can support your child in developing courage by encouraging them to step out of their comfort zone, face their fears, and seek out support when needed.
